A Ghent Devops Kanban retrospective

(reblogged from the kanbanops list)

I returned home last night from a great two day devops training session, led by Dominica DeGrandis.

We had teams over from several different companies with different environments.

Dominica did a good job explaining the principles on which the Kanban method was built, and got the audience involved.

Nothing new under the Sun. Cool stuff by Joyent, though

Yesterday I watched Ben Rockwood’s talk at ChefConf 2012: Chef behind Joyent’s Cloud and the way in which SmartOS is deployed reminded me of how we used to do some of this stuff 20 years ago in the office.

Devops: Automate, automate, automate, and don't do it alone

Automate deployment.

Automate configuration.

Automate code sharing.

Automate testing.

Automate automation.

Spent more time improving code.

Do not just write more code.

Definitely not more of the same.

Cut code, rewrite code, write tests.

Don’t do it alone.

Share. Learn. Improve. Together.

Not just devs, not just ops, not just biz.

A definition of Cloud Computing

Computing in the cloud is about controlling whatever computing service through an api, and deciding from which level up *you* will be in control, and below which you will depend on the vendor’s api.

  • For Software as a Service, you control content.
  • For Platform as a Service, you control application and content.
  • For Infrastructure as a Service, you control platform, application, and content.
